The Turns Family Cup was won by St Mary
Magdalen's after an
entertaining
match with Ryhope.
St Mary's
settled the quicker of the teams and soon
created several good chances. It was
no surprise when they took the lead and they doubled their
advantage almost immediately with a fine goal. Ryhope kept battling hard
but a penalty scored just before half-time put St Mary's firmly
in charge. At 3-0 the game looked safe, but Ryhope came out
in the second half with other ideas. Throwing caution to the
wind, Ryhope attacked in numbers and were rewarded with a
clever breakaway goal. This roused St Mary's into playing
some excellent football but Ryhope were always dangerous on the break.
After Ryhope had created another good chance, St Mary's had an excellent
effort on goal, only to be denied by a terrific save. Despite lots of
openings, there were no further goals. At the final whistle,
St Mary's celebrated a richly-deserved victory, but both sets of players can
be very proud of their
performances.

The Barry Sutherland Cup
was won by St
Mary Magdalen's after a fantastic match with Seaham Trinity. It was
clear from the first whistle that here were two
excellent teams at the peak of their form. Both sides attacked
with great pace and only some last-ditch defending prevented either team
from taking the lead. St Mary's broke the deadlock
after a clever
left-wing
move but Trinity
bounced straight
back and equalised with a cracking shot. This
gave Trinity a lot of confidence
and they scored again to go into half-time with a 2-1
lead. The second half began in similar vein and the crowd quickly
sensed that the next goal was going to be vital. After
both keepers had made impressive saves, it was St Mary's who struck,
and what a goal it was: a thunderbolt that screamed into
the back of the net. Trinity redoubled their efforts but
St Mary's were looking more and more dangerous and
they scored a fine goal to retake the lead. Trinity responded
well but it was St Mary's who struck again with another excellent
shot. Trinity never gave up but were unable to add to their score. At the
final whistle, St Mary's celebrated a hard-earned victory. It was
a brilliant match and credit goes to both teams for providing the
spectators with such a thrilling
game.

The
Ian Gustard Cup was won by
St Mary Magdalen's after
an entertaining match with St Cuthbert's. Both teams settled quickly with
chances created at both ends. It was St Cuthbert's
who took the lead with a powerful shot from the left.
St Mary's bounced straight back and equalised with a superbly-taken free
kick just before half-time. The second half began in
similar fashion with
some
excellent attacking football
met with
outstanding goalkeeping and defence. St Mary's broke the deadlock
when a good break resulted in
a tap-in at the far post, St Cuthbert's looked certain to
equalise only for brave goalkeeping to keep them at bay. Both
teams were really going for it now: St Mary's hit the frame
of the goal with a thundering shot, and a St Cuthbert's free
kick just cleared the bar. However, it was St Mary's who
struck next with a fine goal. At 3-1 the game
looked safe but St Cuthbert's had other ideas. They
came storming back to make the score 3-2. St Cuthbert's were
risking everything in an effort to equalise and St Mary's took full
advantage by scoring a fantastic late breakaway goal to make the game safe. At the
final whistle, St Mary's celebrated a hard-earned victory. It was an
excellent match and credit to the players from both teams for providing such
an exciting final for the
crowd.

The Harry Page Cup was won by St
Mary Magdalen's after an entertaining match
with Westlea. St Mary's began the match like a train and
scored in the opening minute.
This really boosted the St Mary's players' confidence and
they created lots of good
chances
but either couldn't find the target or were foiled by the
determined Westlea keeper who was in fine form. Westlea grew
into the match
and created some chances of their own, but it was St
Mary's who continued to cause the bigger threat. The second half
continued in similar fashion with chances galore for St Mary's
but a combination of the Westlea keeper's brilliance and some fantastic last-ditch
blocks by the Westlea defenders kept the score to 1-0
deep into the game. However, St Mary's kept
pressing and pressing and they were rewarded with a second goal, courtesy of
a wonderful piledriver shot from distance. A tap-in soon followed and
that made the game safe for St Mary's. Westlea
never gave up and yet another outstanding save from the Westlea
keeper prevented St Mary's
from adding a fourth goal.
St Mary's celebrated at the final whistle
as well-deserved winners of the Harry Page Cup. It was a fine
game, played in excellent spirit.
