Congratulations to St Mary Magdalen's who
won the 5 a-side tournament with Seaview finishing in
runners-up spot. The tournament was a very
close affair. With two games remaining, Seaview and St
Mary's were leading the way with 4 points each, with Seaham
Trinity just a single point behind. But then Ryhope produced
their best performance of the competition
to defeat the excellent Seaview side. That left St Mary's needing
just a point from the final game with Seaham
Trinity to guarantee that they finished in top spot;
for Trinity, only a victory would do. This final match
produced the fewest number of goals but the most drama of the
evening. On two occasions the skilful Trinity side seemed certain to
score but the St Mary's keeper made a couple
of outstanding saves. With time running out, St Mary's secured victory with
a penalty goal, which ensured that they lifted the 5
a-side Trophy. St Mary's were worthy winners, displaying
consistently high levels of skill and
determination. There was some excellent football
played throughout the tournament by
all the participating teams, with high quality goals
and some fantastic goalkeeping skills on
display.
5 a-side Rules
a) Each squad consists of no more than 7
players, 5 of whom form the team and the others are subs.
Owing to the fact that we have to adhere to the ESFA rule
whereby no player is allowed to play against a player who is 2
years older/younger than that person, this means that, in
effect, only players from Y5 and Y6 are
eligible.
b) Games last for 3 minutes each
way with no need to toss a coin at the start. Teams turn round
immediately after half-time. Games in the final group league
last for 4 minutes each
way.
c) There are two sets of
qualifying group matches with a maximum of 5 teams per group.
These games are usually played on a Wednesday and Thursday of the same week in October. The top
two teams from each group qualify to compete in a final league group
(usually played on the Friday immediately following the two sets of
group matches). The winners and runners-up of the final league
shall be declared the Seaham 5 a-side Champions and Runners-up
(there is no 'final').
d)
3 points are awarded for a win and 1 point
for a draw. After all group games have been completed, should
teams
have an equal number of points, the highest placed team shall
be decided in order of priority as follows: a) Goal
difference; b) Most goals scored; c) Won most
matches; d)
Result(s) of matches between the teams concerned. Should teams
share a qualifying position in the group and the playing
records are identical, then a 'golden goal' play-off match
may be arranged if time permits. If this
is impossible, the position will be decided by penalty
kicks.
e) All players are allowed inside the goal
area.
f) The goalkeeper is not allowed
out of his/her area.
Penalty for infringement: penalty
kick.
g) Play
is continuous with no corners, goal kicks or throw-ins and there is no off-side.
h) Games are started by the referee
dropping the ball between two opposing players. Play is
restarted in the same way after a goal has been scored.
Players must be in their own half when a game starts in this
fashion.
i) After holding the ball, the goalkeeper must return
the ball into play by rolling it out of the area with an
underarm bowling action.
Penalty for infringement: indirect free kick taken two
metres outside the goal
area.
j) The ball must be kept
below head height or, if the size of the goals is above head
height, no higher than the height of the
goals.
Penalty for infringement: indirect
free kick at the place where the offence
occurs.
k)
Charging is forbidden.
Penalty for infringement: direct free
kick.
l) With deliberate
pass-backs, the normal rule applies. Goalkeepers must
not handle the ball and may only kick the ball
into play.
Penalty for infringement:
indirect free kick taken two metres outside the goal area.
m) When a goalkeeper passes
the ball to a colleague, it cannot be received directly back
from that player - it has to be a third party.
Penalty for infringement:
indirect free kick taken two metres outside the goal
area.
n) Players must stand at least 2 metres
from the ball when an opponent is taking a free kick. In the
event of a free kick being awarded inside the goal area, or
within 2 metres of its boundary line, it shall be taken from a
position 2 metres outside the goal
area.
o) In the event of a
penalty kick being awarded, the kicker must not take more than
two steps in taking the kick.
p) Players
shall wear training shoes or similar footwear (with
non-marking soles) and shin pads. Normal
"outdoor" football boots or boots with blades are not
allowed.
